The East Palestine, Ohio train derailment occurred on February 3, 2023, when a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed and caught fire, prompting evacuations and a controlled release of toxic gases to prevent an explosion.

The incident caused significant environmental damage, contaminating nearby air, soil, and waterways and killing large numbers of fish and aquatic life. While cleanup efforts have reduced immediate risks, concerns remain about long-term pollution and potential health effects.
